Subba Cultcha - Invisible Deck Review - 03/20/06
The Rogers Sisters
The Invisible Deck
Too Pure
Sisters are doing it for themselves; “it” being proper danceable Indie Rock looking both forwards and backwards.
“BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!” That’s the sound of a kick drum being really kicked.
“DANG! DE DANG! DE DANG! DANG!” That’s the sound of a filthy blues riff.
“Why won’t you say what’s wrong, why won’t anyone believe your story/Why won’t you wait, I don’t wanna wait” Those are the lyrics that go with the music.
First track ‘Why Won’t You’ is a bit of a beast, maybe not quite as beastly as say DFA 1979’s mix of Punk, Disco and Metal, but it’s nearly there, yeah, it’s like a polite DFA 1979. The only problem is that I swear that there are at least two male voices on the song, when the three piece band consists of two females and one unknown (sorry to bassist Miyuki Furtado). Ah well, manly voices they may have, but these sisters bang out tune after rocking tune until you can barely rock anymore – notice I said “barely”.
Forthcoming single, ‘Never Learn To Cry’ is a slow burner, building up to a final chorus equal to anything by say, Bloc Party, from a beginning of clipped guitar and a snappy drumbeat. It’s not all so very “now” however. ‘Your Littlest World’ slinks and shimmy’s sexily with the femme fatale like glamour of The Velvet Underground & Nico or Massive Attack and ‘Emotion Control’ comes on all dirty Jesus & Mary Chain while retaining the sweetness of a angelical 60’s girl group.
Finishing up with the fuzz-toned Glam Rock/Sonic Youth Alt Rock of ‘Sooner Or Later’ (a strange mix of styles it may seem on paper, but through speakers it’s damn good), ‘The Invisible Deck’ should easily place The Rogers Sisters in the same league as such NME darlings The Automatic and The Testicicles.
