The London Night Out - Invisible Deck Review - 09/11/06
The Rogers Sisters – The Invisible Deck
The Rogers Sisters skulk out of the shadows with this visceral, helter-skelter of a third album. Slow burning but frequently exploding into flames, this squawking ode to New Yawk punk lays on thick screaming electric strings and schoolyard attitude.
Why Won’t You has dirty dancehall classic daubed all over it, waving a tatty lace glove to Blondie, the Pixies and Talking Heads.
The New York postmark and punkish vibe makes it easy to find echoes of The Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s rattling around the basslines, but there are more layers on view than that. The real shake-up arrives with the vocals – Miyuki Furtado adding steel and weight to Jennifer and Laura Roger’s measured squealing.
Moody and revolving on Your Littlest World but sparky and progressive on The Conversation, The Invisible Deck is a coiled cobra waiting to strike. The one drawback is that it doesn’t strike quite often enough.
That said, this is a filthy exuberant stab of boogie freak pop that bleeds all over the dancefloor and then goes off to sulk. Point of order: these are seriously twisted sisters.
