THE ROGERS SISTERS – The Invisible Deck
Too Pure

Although from their name they might sound very much like an Irish all-girl folk troupe, The Rogers Sisters actually make dance-rock (think Gang of Four, think DFA… you know) and they’re not even all sisters. So the name’s a bit misleading then, but don’t let that put you off, although day after day I get my kicks from spitting at the legions of post-punkers throwing their 1982 throwback drivel in my general direction these two girls (and a boy) manage to do more than simply get my head nodding. Maybe it’s because they can actually play – the songs are perfectly constructed and primed for total party domination while keeping a large amount of grit and discordance, probably more comparable to Erase Errata or early Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with a simple driving 4/4 rhythm to keep your feet moving. Okay so maybe the dance-punk thing didn’t really take off as it should have, but these guys don’t seem to care at all – they’re political, full of energy and seemingly unperturbed by the naysayers as they rollick through ten meaty tracks. Oddly enough (and not just because there’s a girl singing) as I was listening to ‘The Invisible Deck’ I couldn’t help but be reminded of the Breeders, which can’t be a bad thing, there’s something about the lovingly constructed melodies combined with an abrasive crunch that just tickles that part of my brain in the right way, and of course those honeyed female vocals just sweeten the deal. Play loud!
