The Rogers Sisters-The Invisible Deck (Too Pure)

BROOKLYN’S THE Rogers Sisters – Jennifer and Laura Rogers with Miyuki Furtado – cast a cold eye over contemporary America on this, their third album.

The Invisible Deck finds the Rogers berating self appointed Messiahs (‘The Light’), the down side of capitalist, consumer economies (‘The Conversation’, ‘Money Matters’), and the arrogant insularity which leads to ignorance of the wider world (‘Your Littlest World’).

Thankfully the lyrics are oblique enough so that the commentary (the Rogers dislike being called ‘political’) never distracts from the kick-ass music – meaty guitar riffs and throbbing bass (‘Why Won’t You’), catchy choruses, B-52/Pixie-esque vocals, trippy acid rock, and dollops of energetic NY post-punk – making for very cool, often thrilling US indie.
